Our Guitar Community

The Piedmont area of North Carolina is rich in guitar culture, fed by a wealth of talented local guitar teachers as well as private and public high school and college  programs in Winston-Salem, High Point, and Greensboro.   Twice a year, our guitar community comes together to share musical talents with showcasing ensembles, competitions, and festivals.  Come join us!

School Guitar Programs

Bishop McGuinness High School

The guitar program at Bishop McGuinness High School directed by Dr. Alan Hirsh offers beginning- and intermediate-level classes as well as honors solo and ensemble classes. The Guitar Ensemble consists of a select group of advanced guitarists and is distinguished by its unique make-up which includes standard guitars, requinto, and contrabass. The group performs a diversity of musical styles presenting concerts throughout the Triad community as well as at festivals such as the prestigious GFA (Guitar Foundation of America) symposium at UNSCA, Appalachian Guitarfest in Boone NC, Guitarganza at UNCG, the Long Island Guitar Festival, and the Songe d’été en musique in Quebec. Guilford College

Guilford College is a small liberal arts Quaker school in Greensboro, NC. Students benefit from a strong, interdisciplinary liberal arts base, small classes that stimulate active learning, group participation, the option of double-majoring, and service to the greater community. The guitar program is nestled in the context of a nurturing and challenging technical and musical environment. The music curriculum includes Performance Development, rigorous technique, engaged music theory sequence, music history and ensemble/chamber music. Guilford’s guitar ensemble tours annually with the college choir including east coast tours and abroad. Guilford’s graduates have attended the most prestigious graduate guitar institutions in the US. The Music Academy of NC

The Music Academy of NC is a community music school whose mission is to enable students of all ages, interests, abilities, and backgrounds to discover, develop, realize, and express their inherent talents. Our guitar faculty are active performers in the Triad area and take students of all ages and levels. They teach a variety of different musical styles, including classical, rock, blues, jazz, folk, and bluegrass. In addition to guitar, they also teach banjo, bass guitar, mandolin, and sitar! New Garden Friends School

Penn-Griffin School for the Arts

Penn-Griffin School for the Arts in High Point NC is a grade 6-12 Guilford County Public Schools Arts Magnet offering daily instruction in classical guitar. Middle school offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels for all students, and high school offers intermediate, advanced, and honors guitar for auditioned students. Students perform frequently in regional events and have earned numerous prizes in competitions and scholarships for college study. Weaver Academy

Located in the middle of Downtown Greensboro, Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts has been called the hidden gem of Guilford County, NC. Students audition to earn an opportunity to study in this intensive 4 year program. Aside from daily guitar classes plus 5 additional supportive music classes during their high school career, students of the guitar program also maintain vigorous academic performances.
